The Sydney Morning Herald, Nov. 15, 1954 Big Sail CARIOCA'S VILLIERS AND CUP A.J.C. handicapper Mr. Ian Feaks last night gave champion Carioca topweight of 9-10 for both the Villiers Stakes and the Summer Cup. This is the same weight as Mr.
Feaks, gave Carioca for both the last Epsom and Metropolitan. But the class of horse engaged in the Villiers and the Summer Cup is much weaker. The Villiers Stakes (1m) will be run at Randwick on Saturday, December 18, and the Summer Cup (11m) on Monday, December 27. Carioca has not raced since August 21 when he finished third in the weight-for-age Warwick Stake: (7f) behind Tarien and Princ: Cortauld at Warwick Farm. He won the summer double in 1952 carrying 8-2 in the Villiers and 8-10, including the maximum 10lb penalty.
in the Summer Cup. In the Villiers Carioca is handicapped 0 meet the second topweight Silver Phantom (9-4) on 5lh better terms than in weights for the last Epsom Handicap, which neither contested. De COURCY, DAVIDSON FACE TRIAL The batting of Jim de Courcy and Alan Davidson will be of special interest to the Australian Test selectors when the match hetween the M.C.C. and N.S.W. resumes at S.C.G.
to-day. Two selectors, Messrs. J. Ryder and D. Seddon, are attending the match.
Alan Davidson was below his best first bowling innings, form but in England's took remarkable catches. N.S.W. has scored 294 runs for wickets, in reply to England's first innings total of 252. Billy Watson (138) and Jim de Courcy (20) are the not-out batsmen. Bob Simpson and Alan Davidson among the batsmen to follow.
England's bowlers and fieldsmen will strive to keep the N.S.W. lead within moderate limits. "Light" Report The adjournment taken without reference to umpires Elphinston and MacKinnon on Saturday because of bad light is expected to be the subject of a report to the N.S.W. Cricket Assocfation. The playing conditions of the M.C.C.
team's tour specifically delete the authority given under the Cricket for the captains (or their representative at the wickets) deciding the question of light. It is provided that only the umpires can make a decision on light. and then only after a player has appealed to them. The same provision appears in Australia's Sheffield Shield competition rules. In English -class cricket the question of the fitness of light for play is left entirely to the umpires.
These special rules suggest that an amendment to the law regarding light should be made putting the matter in the hands of the umpires (on appeal or otherwise), thus preventing confusion. £150 For Partners Australian welterweight champion George Barnes expects to spend at least on sparring partners in his attempt to win the British Empire title from New Zealander Barry Brown. Barnes wil! meet Brown at the Sydney Sports Ground next Wednesday week in the Australian Boxing Club's first outdoor promotion this summer. Both men have spent training time in the Wyong to Belmont area but have returned to Sydney to finish their last 10 days of training. Barnes is anxious to secure southpaw sparring partners and will pay £1 a round until the finish of his workouts.
Bookings have already opened and prices are £4 ringside. £2 outer ringside, £1 grandstands and hill area. 9-10 FOR Aids Win Miss All Events Swedish Davis Cup star Sven Davidson has Ajax, which made full use of a large sail when the wind died, leads in the N.S.W. 18-footer League Swede To to race win on Sydney, English Harbour cricket yesterday. captain Ajax Len went Hutton on decorated the boat with red, white and blue ribbons WORLD CUP TO ENGLAND PARIS, November 14 (A.A.P.).England beat France 16-12 in the grand final of the Rugby League World Cup yesterday.
In the earlier matches of the series, in which Australia and New Zealand also took part, England and France shared top place the table, each with two wins and a draw. Australia helped England to win the first World Cup the by taking the sting out of Chance For Pran Mikus Two European middleweights may be brought Australia by Stadiums Ltd. if Pran Mikus does well at Sydney Stadium to-night. The last time the pair clashed was in the Doncaster (1m) at Randwick April 17. in which Carioca, carryling 9-7. finished third with Silver Phantom (8-10) fourth. Silver Phantom's rise in weight for both the Villiers Stakes and Summer Cup follows his brilliant first-up win in Saturday's Horsley Handicap at Warwick Farm, Connections have not yet completed plans for Silver Phantom but it would not surprise to see him set for the Summer Cup, with his stablemate Kev Mar the stable representative in the Villiers. Kev Mar, with 7-10.
has 21b less than he was given for the Epsom but 11lb more than he carried when he won the Canterbury Flying on November 6. Nagpuni, third topweight with 9-3, has paid the penalty for his recent series of wins with big weights in sprint races. Bookmakers said last night that Carioca, Silver Phantom and Birdwood probably would be vying for favouritism in early markets on the Villiers. They added that Carioca and Master Proven could be the carly favourites for the Summer Cup. JAPANESE SIDE HERE Combined Sydney will field a strong representative baseball side at the Sports Ground to-night in the first of a series of matches against the Tokyo Giants, The Giants were not extended in Brisbane, due to their power hitting and the inability of the Queensland batters to handle speed ball pitching.
A team personality is Wally Yonamini, currently the highest salaried ball player in Japan. A speedy centre fielder, he played professional grid-iron I football in the off-scason in America for three years before joining the tourists. Other outstanding performers among the visitors include pitcher Gerry Matsuoka and catcher Jyun Hiroda. An exhibition of trick golf shots by American golfer Joe Kirkwood will precede the match. withdrawn from N.S.W.
tennis championship events. Davidson has notified officials that he will not play in his doubles match, postponed from Saturday until to-day. He was drawn with team-mate Lennert against English juniors Ron Becker and John Barrett. Davidson forfeited his singles match against John Bromwich on Saturday. When down one set and 2-4 to Bromwich he told the umpire that he would forfeit because of a blistered right hand.
Davidson is understood to be having medical treatment for his blisters, which are not expected to recover for al least four or five days. N.S.W, officials said last night that Australia Davidson, who is in to interzone represent Sweden in the Cup final against United States, had placed this object above performances in State titles. Five Davis Cup representatives, Ken Rosewall, Lewis Hoad, Tony Trabert. Mervyn Rose and Rex Hartwig centre-court are set down to play in doubles matches to-day. Most important game will be the clash hetween Tony Don WorthingTrabert-Ham a Richardson and ton.

French forwards in a bard match Thursday. England won the Cup because its forwards, led by Dave Valentine, fought insisintently for the whole match and dominated the second half.
There were brilliant backline movements by both sides, but credit for England's victory must go to its forwards "The Aussles helped us terrifically." England's captain, Dave Valentine, said later. "They put Delaye out of the game and they gave the French forwards some hammer." Puig Aubert, France's leader, agreed that the match at Nantes two days carlier, when France beat Australia 15-5, cost France her chance of gaining the Cup. France led only once during yesterday's match. when Cantoni scored a brilliant try carly in the second half. Early Advantage France held the advantage first 20 minutes, when Audoubert was winning the scrums and the French backs were slashing gaps in England's defence.
But with Valentine and Robinson always straightening up play, and Jackson, Helme, and Brown playing fine football, the English team got top near the end of the first half. England scored four tries to France's two, and in the second half was always calling the tune. Eagland. 16 (Rose. Brown, Helme, Naughton tries; Ledgard beat Frances 12 (Cantoni, Contrastin tries: Puig Aubert 1 goal, 2 penalty goals).
